CommentsFormer crew member MM2(SS) David Cates now a retired MMC(SS). My initial submarine qualification was on the Westpac of 1982. Worked for John Thompson, John Mowka and David Kennedy in M-Division. On board for 1982 and part of 1983. I have lost track of many since I retired but use to see Reno Fabii, Jeffrey Hake and Ken Honadel around. Ty Brunfield, R. K. Jones and J.J. Jones all helped me qualify. So many more names are flooding back like Charlie Christian, Niznick (I am sure that is spelled wrong), Graham and Jerry Shibly. I am trying to find one of the old ship plaques as it is the only ship I was on that I don't have. Does anyone have an extra or know where one is available? My contact information is David Cates (865)548-4088
CommentsMy father, Milton Hains served on Indianapolis from 1934 to Aug 1938 as a Signalman on the bridge. His brother, Les Hains and their friend Lester Wompler served on the ship from 1934 to 1939. I have a felt and leather banner that was signed by FDR from his trip to the South American conference. Dad still proudly has the 2 Neptune Society diplomas framed and on the wall. He has talked about going to a reunion, but at 92 and dealing with COPD, the trip would be too much. He speaks often of the Honor it was to be on the Indianapolis. I met one of the survivors at the Orange County Fair a few years ago and was proud to shake his hand and see a knowing look in his eye. It was a moment I will never forget. CommentsNick Christian... Hows it going man. You were with me the night I met my wife Kathleen at Studebakers..it was Dave Ciasto's birthday and we hit TGIF bar then the club....if you recall... Anyway..still with Kat..married 13 years now and have 2 kids.. Here's what I know about people you asked about...I'll tell you if I know it for a fact or if it's just what I heard... Rich 'Lucky' Charns went to A school as an instructor...heard he got 'released' for something or another..but not confirmed Sammi Sinokrot went to Italy for tender duty 95 or so...don't know beyond that except he probably runs a brothel knowing him .. Alston? Alston? you mean Aldridge my fellow E-div'er. Best story ever. Someone actually made him logroom yoeman on his next boat, he left confidential burn in his car, car got stolen...police find car...police find confidential burn...police call NIS...'Cud' is still in brig last I heard. This is NOT confirmed but I was told this as truth rather than conjecture by someone.. Simon Martin interestingly...I just ran into him in the Kapolei Chili's at the bar...he works for some weapons company doing torpedo something or other here at Pearl... Tim Parker Tim I think went to Prototype in SC and I heard married a schoolteacher or something... Dave and Bobbi Gray You won't believe this..but the biggest FTN guy on board..you guessed it..went back in the navy in the latter 90's...go figure..incidentally so did 'Trapper' John Macintyre...can you believe that crap? Jared Key heard almost identical about Jared as Tim Parker... Hobbit Haywood Still here in Hawaii..see him once in a while..he retired..worked for financial company and electric company or refinery I think. His wife Emmy still cuts my and my wife's hair..so I see him once in a while at her shop..they adopted a girl who is 12 now... Tom Murphy heard he lives in SC or virginia or something back east...also heard he is some sort of semi-pro waterskiier for some city's official ski team or some craziness....Tom? I have contact with various others..Deal, Isley, Voigt, etc.. -Chris Richmond

CommentsHey there shipmates, Steve Fred Freed here. Anybody else out there have that channel fever going on right now as we build towards getting together for the reunion? As of right now,I'm on vaction for 16 days and I'm looking forward to the road trip with Bob Trigger Reedy and Stan Coon Rash from Omaha to Indianapolis. Say prayers that we make the 460 miles. Pictures, maybe a video will be shown at the reunion of our road trip.See you all shortly.
CommentsGreat Website Garry Goodin, IC3 Nuke, served onboard 79-83. Retiring this month as EMCM, after 30 years. Served with the likes of Art Arehart, Tim George, Nick Nicholas, Brockman, John Wayne Jones and many other crazy charactures from the early days. Semper Gumby.
CommentsI believe my father Gerald Vigiani was a crew member on this ship. He would tell how he was in the water for days after his ship was hit by a torpedo and sank. He is gone now but I would really like to know.
CommentsIC1 here, great re-union, thanks for urging me to go to the race on Sunday, it was super. Bob LaBonte, my pics are on the way. Chuck
CommentsPullng here,The reunion was very interesting and yes i would do it again.Very good job, thank you. Looking foward to seeing the pics
CommentsChuck Marden (SuppO, 3-79 to 2-82) here, just happened across this website and it brought me right back 25 years. Just sorry I found it days after the reunion. Seeing the pictures of our commissioning CO and XO plus a couple memorable Chiefs was great. Enjoyed reading the notes from shipmates from the early days like Pulling (one of my most memorable MS's) and Congrats EMCM Goodin. I retried back in 2005 out of the Reserves as an O6 with total 27yrs.
CommentsHey to Chucky Marden Pulling here,im sure your time with me was quite memorable, hahaha I am a changed fellow, I dont drink anymore that made a big difference in me,Been married to the same woman for 22yrs.Raised 2 boys .One is Navy and one is Army. If i had it to do over i would do it differnt. Best Reguards Roger Sidebander At yahoo.com
CommentsI meandered thru the website Thanks Bob Appreciate it Didn't recognize too many folks Kligge Steinke the CO XO from precomm. and a couple of others but the names escape me. Been here in New Mexico since 84 Ops director for Lockheed at a site. Enjoyed the trip down memory lane. RM1SS Fickes Fixie
CommentsDavid M. Ciasto, CPA here. I was on Indy from 1989 to 1994. After that I got out and started a new life. First wife is no longer around, but my second one is great. After the Navy, I worked several jobs (mechanic, tech writer, power plant operator, and now I'm a CPA). Along the way, I also picked up a BS in Technology, BS in Accounting, and MBA (Finance). I quit drinking in 1995 (since some of you know I got quite squirrily when drunk), but I'm still a nut. Life is good. I have a good job and a good family. The Navy kind of sucked when I was in, but it was great experience (and it probably beats the hell out of being in the Army in Iraq). If anyone I know is out there, my email is dciasto(at)sbcglobal.net. (This site won't let me type in the ampersand)
CommentsFrank Perez here MSSN aboard the Indy 89-91. Miss all the old guys that remember me, Cully Dogg, Gomez, V-12, Mooney, Jones, Fitz, Lafleche, Magana, and many others. Best time of my life....Hope you are all are doing well....can reach me at fperez3 at transchicago dot com
CommentsHello all Dave Ginapp MM1 (SS), I was on the commisioning crew and got off after the first trip to Pearl. This is a great site and sure brought back alot of good memories. I sure enjoyed the pictures and everyone looks like I remembered them. (davejan cox.net)
CommentsAloha, This is Simon Martin. Nice web site. I was the M div Chief from 1990 when the boat finally got out of overhaul until 1993ish, when I was commissioned as a CWO. We went to Sardinia Italy, Sammy was there with us on Simon Lake, then Groton CT. I talked with Chris Richmond just before we left Hawaii this summer. I work for Raytheon in Norfolk VA, running the Depot for them here. I retired from the Nav in 1998 as a Lt, worked for Intel in Northern CA, moved to Hawaii with Raytheon building Torpedoes and now am repairing DLRS, Sea Sparrow launchers, Patriot Missile parts, Aegis radars, NESP antennas, SURC boats etc. My wife Cindy is still fine after 27 years, our son Collin is 20 and doing well in college, studying film and television production...hes our real retirement plan. Its good to hear some of the names from the past. We certainly had some fun BBQs on the North Shore and at Bellows.

Date: 17 Apr 2007 Time: 06:05:36 Commentshey gentleman its v-12 served 89-92 seeing who is out there great website.
Date: 15 Apr 2007 Time: 08:23:40 CommentsMM2 Nick Christian (91-92 M Div). Only on Indy for about 18 months but had a lot of fun. It’s good seeing names here from that time and hopefully will see more. Hey Chris Richmond what ever happened to Rich “Lucky” Charns, Sammi Sinokrot, or Alston? Went to boot and NNPS with Charns but never heard from him once off Indy. I heard Simon Martin (MMCS then CWO) got out and works for some computer company in California; ETC Mark Brown is with Caterpiller last I heard from him. Trevor Harris (MM2) went to Cal Poly was in Maryland then returned to California; I lost contact with him. I was in Mike Cramer’s (MM2/ELT) wedding to Dawn back in 94-95; what a blast that was but then lost touch with him as well after he located in the midwest somewhere and had a daughter. So as memories of WestPac 92 come flooding back to me- whatever happened to Tim Parker, Dave and Bobbi Gray, Jared Key, Ron Smith, Bob Torres, Gary Sched, V-12, Mooney, Schnell, Hobbit Haywood, Tom Murphy, or Mean Dick MacClean? Will be checking back in, drop me a line franklinnative@gmail.com Thanks- Nick Christian Jr
Date: 05 Apr 2007 Time: 16:33:48 CommentsHey guys, Chris Richmond here...crew member from 91-96(E-Div)..mentally and physically broke E-div officers the likes of Maulik and McNarny...still live in Hawaii...Shane Voigt, rc-div from my time still lives a few blocks away. Frank Deal....the 'unknown dig-it' from the internet photos section is my good buddy and just moved away from Hawaii to Atlanta and he should be able to make it since he is a pilot and barely does any work... I just heard about this site and the reunion stuff from Jim Munsell(he attended the 2005 one I believe), so I will be signing up and trying to come this year... Anyone with any updates or found crewmembers or whatever can email me at chrisr@hawaii.rr.com. Rakestraw...if you're out there....AMF!!

Date: 24 Mar 2007 Time: 02:58:54 CommentsI was there from 82-84. I just read all of the posts. I broke out the picture book, heheheee. I didn't think so at the time, but now I'm thinking that was a lot of fun, like a retard. Oh well, all I gotta remember is cleaning decks and shitters after watch and Drills, and,,,,,,,,it kinda puts it in context....heheheeeee I was 17 when I showed up. It was probably the most memorable time of my life. Those pictures of Scott drinking his dolphins bring back a lot of drunk memories. Anyway, I got a lot of incriminating pictures from that time, and I'll try to make it out this year. 4 days with a bunch of old fat dudes, well, I'm sure I can make a couple of them. Orvis

Date: 24 Jan 2007 Time: 14:09:17 CommentsHi Guys, This is Jim Asbury MM2(SS) M-Div (Active Duty 1993-1998). I was on the Indy from March 6, 1995 to Dec 21, 1998, and I was the last wearer of the SNOB buckle while the Indy was a commissioned warship. I got a 3 month early out, and moved with my wife Malia, to New Jersey, outside of Philadelphia, PA, where I now work as a Mechanical Engineer for the US Army Corps of Engineers, as a Marine Systems Engineer. I now as of 1-9-2007 have two children, a boy, Jimmy, whose 3, and my daughter Anela. Oh, and those of my shipmates who read this, my 1969 GTO runs now. Malia and I were at the first reunion in Groton, it was a great time, got to see some of my old shipmates who are chiefs, or have gone O-gang. We probably won't be able to make the 07 reunion, but were looking forward to the next one after that. I was looking at the photos that were found on the Internet, and these guys were my shipmates. The first, second and 4th photos are EM2(SS) Frank Deal. The forth is I believe from Halfway night on our last deployment before we decommissioned the ship. The third photo has the following people in it that I know of; From left to right, next to the soundpowered phone at the Chief's table is EM1(SS) Sexton (E-Div), YN1(SS) 'Gonzo' Gonzowski, CDR Bill Toti (Skipper), Can't remember the mess attendant's name, and ET2(SS) Chris Litalian (RC-Div). Siting down at the table are MM3(SS) Chad Hopponen (M-Div ELT), MM1(SS) Tom Cook (M-Div LPO), and ET3(SS) Harrison (I Think) (RC-Div). The fifth with the guy with the cream on his poopy suit is I believe the Reactor Controls officer, but I forget his name.
